How to write AI prompts: examples for beginners

Write a clear prompt, improve the draft, and check the facts.

  • 5 min read
  • Step by step
  • Copy-ready prompt

A prompt is simply an instruction you give an AI tool. You do not need magic phrases. Give it a task, the facts it needs, and a description of a good answer. You will practise by turning a rough note into a useful message.

Before you start

  • An AI assistant you can access.
  • A short practice note with no private customer details.

Skills you’ll need: Use a web browser, write a short instruction, and compare the draft with your original facts. No coding needed.

How this helps your brand

Give an assistant enough context to reduce repeated corrections and keep your facts intact. Keep a checked example to guide your next project.

  1. Step 1: Write the task in one sentence

Start with a verb: rewrite, summarise, compare, or organise. Example: “Rewrite this appointment reminder so it is clear and friendly.” Ask for one result before asking for a whole campaign.

  2. Step 2: Add the reader and the facts

Example: “This is for a customer collecting a repaired bike on Friday after 3 pm. They must bring their collection receipt.” Include only facts the assistant is allowed to use. Say that missing details should become questions.

  3. Step 3: Set the shape of the answer

Example: “Keep it under 60 words. Use plain English. Include the collection time and receipt reminder. Do not add a discount or a promise.” These are concrete checks you can make on the result.

  4. Step 4: Correct one thing at a time

If the message is too formal, say “Keep the facts, but make the tone more conversational.” If it adds information, point to the unsupported sentence. Start a fresh conversation if the assistant keeps mixing old facts into the task.

  5. Step 5: Save a reusable version

Replace the details with brackets: [customer], [date], [action]. Store the prompt beside a checklist: correct facts, appropriate tone, no unsupported promises, and the requested length. Re-read each new output; a saved prompt does not guarantee a correct answer.

You're done when

  • You wrote a prompt with a task, context, facts, and output format.
  • You corrected the draft and saved a reusable version.

COPY AND PASTE

Rewrite this note for [reader]: [note]. Use only these approved facts: [facts]. Tone: [tone]. Maximum length: [word count]. Include [required details]. Do not invent missing details or promises. Ask up to three questions if information is missing. After the draft, list the facts I should check.

Replace the [brackets] with your details. Paste into the AI assistant you use and review the result before sharing it.
