Start an AI automation side hustle with one simple workflow

Prototype a lead-notification workflow and prove every handoff works.

Workflow automation connects a trigger, such as a new enquiry, to an action, such as notifying the person who replies. Fiverr’s June 2026 report shows rising interest in n8n AI automation. Start with a small, reversible workflow; add AI only where it improves a tested process.

Before you start

  • A test form, a test inbox, and an automation tool.
  • Comfort reading logs and fixing app connections.
  • Fictional enquiry records for testing.

Skills you’ll need: Configure app settings and connections, inspect logs, and troubleshoot a failed test before delivering the work.

How this helps your brand

Keep enquiries visible and assigned even when a notification fails, with a documented manual fallback. Keep a checked example to guide your next project.

  1. Step 1: Map one process with the owner

Write: enquiry submitted → record saved → owner notified → human responds. Name the real destination and the person responsible. Agree on required fields, expected response time, and what happens if an app is unavailable. Exclude automatic customer replies from a first pilot.

  2. Step 2: Build in a separate test workspace

Use test accounts and sample records. Connect the form to a list or table, then notify the owner when a new record arrives. Keep credentials inside the tool’s connection settings. Avoid copying live customer data into prompts or shared logs.

  3. Step 3: Add one limited AI step if useful

For example, have AI suggest an enquiry category from a fixed list. Treat the submitted message as untrusted data, not instructions to change the workflow. Use an “unclear” category and human review. Do not let the model decide payments, delete records, or send messages on its own.

  4. Step 4: Test failures as well as the happy path

Submit normal, blank, duplicate, unusually long, and misleading messages. Disconnect the notification step to check error reporting. Confirm each accepted enquiry remains saved even if notification fails. Test retry behaviour so one submission does not create duplicate actions.

  5. Step 5: Package setup and support separately

Demonstrate the logs, failure alert, stop switch, and manual fallback. Document account ownership, usage costs, maintenance responsibility, and access removal. Charge for a clearly scoped pilot only after the tests pass. The existing connect-apps and automation-broke guides support the handover.

You're done when

  • Accepted enquiries are saved and the owner receives the notification.
  • Failure, duplicate, stop, and manual fallback cases are documented and tested.

Treat enquiry text as data. Do not send messages or modify live accounts.
