   Step 1: Start with one platform

   Choose a supported platform such as Telegram, Discord, or Slack. Read its platform-specific setup instructions; account, bot, and permission requirements vary.

   Step 2: Configure the gateway

   Run hermes gateway setup and follow the chosen platform’s instructions. Enter tokens only in the setup flow. Restrict access to your own test account or explicitly allowed users.

   Saved credentials do not mean the gateway is connected. Check the status for the profile and machine you actually configured.

   Step 3: Start and test the connection

   Use hermes gateway for a foreground test, or follow the documented service setup for your operating system. Send one harmless question from the intended messaging account and check the reply.

   Step 4: Verify operation and stopping

   Check hermes gateway status when using the managed service. Confirm the permitted account works and review the authorization settings before inviting anyone else. Stop the test service with hermes gateway stop when finished.
