Make and refine an image for a website or social post using Grok Imagine. This walkthrough uses the consumer Grok website or app; Imagine is a Grok feature, and this is not a walkthrough of the separate Grok Bot app.

Before you start

  • A signed-in Grok account at grok.com or in the official Grok iOS or Android app, with image generation available.
  • One intended placement, such as a wide website header or a square social post, and a short description of the image you need.
  • Any reference photo you intend to use, with permission to upload and adapt it. You can also start entirely from text.

Skills you’ll need: Write a clear visual brief, spot subject errors, and judge the revised image in its intended placement.

How this helps your brand

An intentional image can give a website header or social post a consistent visual direction. Checking the subject and the final crop helps keep the result appropriate for the place customers will see it.

  1. Step 1: Decide what the image must communicate

Write one sentence describing the job of the image. For a café website, that might be: show a calm place to enjoy a morning coffee, with room on the left for a heading.

Choose the subject, setting, lighting, colours and composition before generating. These are details you can ask Imagine to follow; you will still need to inspect the result.

    • Subject: one ceramic coffee cup on a wooden table.
    • Setting and light: a quiet café, with soft morning light from a window.
    • Composition: a wide image, cup on the right, uncluttered space on the left.

    Placement
    Cup right; clear space left

This café header has one clear subject, a light source, and open room for page copy. Use the same decisions to make your prompt specific.
  2. Step 2: Open Imagine and send a clear request

Open grok.com/imagine, or use Imagine in your official Grok app. Fill in the prompt below and send it as an image request. Start with one concept so you can judge whether the subject and layout are right.

If you use a reference photo in a Grok chat, choose the + beside the message input and attach it. Wait for the upload to finish, then describe the edit you want. Say which parts of the reference must stay the same.

Tip: A generated product picture can change the product. For a real item you sell, compare every visible detail against your original photo before using it.

  3. Step 3: Check the subject before the style

Look at the whole image, then enlarge it to inspect details. Is the requested object present? Is it on the correct side? Is the empty space usable for your heading?

For the café example, check the cup handle, rim, table edges and background objects. An attractive colour palette does not make a distorted cup suitable for your website.

    • Check any visible words, signs, logos or product labels.
    • Look for extra objects, strange reflections or inconsistent shadows.
    • Reject an image that suggests a real location or product detail you cannot substantiate.

    3. 3
ClutterAny extra objects or stray lettering?
      Check

Inspect the requested subject first. A polished style cannot repair a distorted cup.

Zoom in on the cup, then check the light and background. Reject a result if its shape or details are wrong, even when the overall style looks appealing.
  4. Step 4: Ask for one specific revision

Grok supports refining generated images with follow-up requests. Name the change and the details to preserve. For example: keep the cup and morning light, remove the plant, and leave the left half of the table empty.

If the composition is still wrong, return to the original brief and simplify it. Remove competing subjects and ask for one object against a plain background. Compare the new result with your requirements instead of assuming every revision is an improvement.

If generation is unavailable or a usage limit appears, read the message before retrying. Check Settings, then Usage for your account allowance; do not keep submitting the same request while access is paused.

  5. Step 5: Judge it in the intended placement

Use the image in a draft of the intended page or post before publishing. Check the crop at the size people will actually see, including a phone-sized view. Make sure a heading placed over it stays readable.

Keep the chosen prompt and a note of the revision that worked, so you can describe the same direction next time. Grok-generated media includes a watermark; preserve it and other provenance signals.

A wide image can crop differently on a phone. Confirm that the heading, subject, and watermark remain visible in the actual placement.

You're done when

  • The generated image contains the requested subject, composition and usable empty space.
  • You have checked fine details and any visible writing against the brief or reference.
  • The image works in the intended crop on a phone-sized draft, with its watermark preserved.

Generate an image for [a wide website header or a square social post].

Subject: [one main subject]
Setting: [where it is]
Style: [photograph, illustration or another style]
Lighting and colours: [specific light and palette]
Composition: [where the subject sits and where empty space should be]
Details to avoid: [unwanted objects or clutter]

Example direction: one cream ceramic coffee cup on the right of a wooden café table, soft morning window light, warm neutral colours, a wide composition with uncluttered space on the left. No lettering or logos. If I attach a reference, preserve [the specific details that must remain accurate].

Replace the bracketed fields and paste into Grok Imagine. Attach your reference first if the request depends on one. This is a consumer Grok workflow, not an API request or a Grok Bot command.
